Walhalla Man Remains in Jail on Charges Related to Tuesday Afternoon Pursuit

Darrell Scott Brooks

(Walhalla, SC)-------------------------------------A Walhalla man remains in jail today on charges obtained by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office related to a Tuesday afternoon pursuit.

57 year old Darrell Scott Brooks, of Playground Road, was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center at around 3:17pm Thursday and given a combined $28,267.50 surety bond. Brooks has been charged with one count each of Failure to stop for a Blue Light, Resisting Arrest and Receiving Stolen Goods.

Brooks was also served with a Violation of Probation Warrant.  A hold has been placed on Brooks by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office received word on Tuesday that a vehicle, a white Audi Q5 that was reported stolen, was being operated in the Westminster area.  A Deputy from the Uniform Patrol Bureau responded to the area.  While on routine patrol on Longcreek Highway near Mar Val Drive, the Deputy observed a vehicle that matched the description of the reported stolen vehicle.

The Deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop; however, the driver of the vehicle did not pull over and accelerated his vehicle away from the Deputy’s patrol vehicle, whereupon a pursuit began.

The driver of the Audi, later identified as Brooks, drove recklessly by passing on double yellow lines and by speeding.  The pursuit ended on Longcreek Highway near Raines Road, which is near Longcreek, after the Deputy observed the Audi off the road on an embankment.

As the Deputy approached the Audi, he observed Brooks running from the scene.  After running up a hill, Brooks was taken into custody, without incident, after obeying officer commands.

Brooks was transported to the hospital for further treatment and evaluation.  Further investigation revealed that the Audi was confirmed stolen from Anderson County.  Brooks’ wallet, with his driver’s license inside, was discovered by Deputies inside of the Audi.  Deputies were able to confirm that Brooks was driving with a suspended license.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived on scene to conduct an accident investigation involving the Audi.  The Audi was towed away from the scene.  Deputies did make contact with the registered owner of the vehicle.

Brooks was also cited by the Sheriff’s Office for Reckless Driving, Driving under Suspension – 1st Offense and Simple Possession of Marijuana after a quantity of the drug was located on his person.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
