Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Seneca Man on Attempted Murder Charge

(Walhalla, SC)--------------------------------------The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Seneca man on a charge of Attempted Murder yesterday in relation to a Monday afternoon shooting incident on Mormon Church Road near Seneca.


39 year old Darrell Earl Maxwell, Jr., of Brentwood Drive, was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center around 12:40pm Tuesday. Maxwell was also charged with one count each of First Degree Burglary, Petit Larceny and Possession of a Weapon during Commission of a Violent Crime. Maxwell, Jr. was also served with a warrant on a charge of Distribution of Heroin related to a separate investigation.


A deputy from the Uniform Patrol Division was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Mormon Church Road Monday afternoon in relation to a shooting incident. The deputy began an investigation which was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division.


According to arrest warrants, Maxwell, Jr. is accused of possessing a firearm and of shooting at the victim numerous times with a pistol. Maxwell, Jr. is also accused of breaking into and entering a residence, without consent, to commit a crime armed with a deadly weapon. Maxwell, Jr., also according to arrest warrants, stole items from the victim


For safety reasons, the name of the victim will not be released by the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.


The charge of Distribution of Heroin stems from a separate investigation in which an undercover operative, working at the direction of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office, made a controlled purchase of Heroin from Maxwell, Jr. in 2021.


At this time, Maxwell, Jr. remains in custody at the Oconee County Detention Center on a combined $115,000 surety bond.


The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation.
